40% of Burglaries are OPPORTUNISTIC the sudden realisation that a house is unoccupied is very tempting for some.

The saying ‘Lock it or Loose it’ is sadly very true.

Commonsense tips to beat the Burglar.

  1. Small precious items such a jewellery and watches and those with great sentimental value can be deposited in the bank or install a floor safe. Recently a 95 Kilo safe was rolled out of a bedroom down the stairs, out of the house, down the garden and away.
  2. Photograph and record all valuables and mark them with your Post Code.
  3. Car keys should always be kept out of sight especially the second car during holiday times.
  4. Fit a Burglar Alarm and use it and tell the police who is the key holder.
  5. Keys and important documents should be out of view away from doors and windows.
  6. Check who’s at the front door before opening it.
  7. Close and lock the doors and windows when you go out, or even if your going to upstairs rooms or the back garden.
  8. Keep valuables out of sight.
  9. Leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home.
  10. Install a visible burglar alarm and keep it well maintained. (see Met Police advice click)

BASICS BEFORE YOU GO AWAY.

  1. Cancel all deliveries milk, papers and time online shopping etc. discreetly without telling a shop full of people, important to only tell those who need to know that your away.
  2. Timers for lights and a radio or two.
  3. Avoid closed curtain during the day they will attract attention.
  4. Garage and shed should be as secure as possible especial because they are a source of handy tools to be used to break into the main house.

  6. Arrange for pets to be properly looked after.
  7. Don’t leave TVs and Hi-fi’s visible through windows.
  8. If you have a drive way ask a friend to park their car on it whilst your away.
  9. If your going to be away from a longtime a well kept garden that suddenly becomes untidy is a dead giveaway so cut the lawns and ask a friend to keep things tidy or take out a maintenance contract.
  10. Getting a friend to pop round and close curtains at night and remove any post from the letterbox is a great help.
